Event Address: Johnson Auditorium, Pilgrim House Conference Centre, 69 Northbourne Avenue Canberra City ACT 2603
Cost: FREE – please RSVP to act@architecture.com.au
Website: www.architecture.com.au/act or direct link www.architecture.com.au/i-cms?page=1.13262.156.3142.13190.8592.16523
Event Description:
This seminar will address affordability issues in the delivery of sustainable housing. There will also be an overview of all of the houses that will open in and around Canberra on Sunday 11th September.
SPEAKERS & TOPICS
“Cost Benefit Pathways to Zero Emission Housing” Trivess Moore, RMIT University
The costs and benefits of more energy efficient housing are frequently argued in terms of a trade off between sustainability and affordability, and debate is focused particularly on upfront capital costs. There is a lack of clear cost benefit information on the impact of higher energy efficiency standards, and similarly on the impacts of integrating renewable energy strategies with energy efficiency strategies. Trivess’ research at RMIT investigates the lifetime economic and environmental costs and benefits of improved sustainable housing options.
“Molonglo Sustainable Demonstration Precinct” Rob Thorman, Land Development Agency
The Land Development Agency is proposing a Sustainable Demonstration Precinct in Molonglo which will include innovative compact housing that demonstrates sustainability outcomes and life cycle cost savings. The precinct will include around 60 houses with a common open space area. There will be a focus on solar access to show that solar requirements can be met even on small blocks. Quality of construction will also be a priority with the use of thermal imagery and air leakage testing. An important part of the project will be to assess materials and inclusions (for example hot water systems, glazing, lighting and materials) for cost effectiveness. How do you go about making the trade-offs to optimise sustainability and affordable living?
Thank you to the sponsors of this event: Greg Hedger of Luton, Enviro Friendly Products & the ACT Government Land Development Agency.

Sustainability In Action
Date: Sunday 11th September 2011
Time: 1.00 – 4.00pm
Event Address: Mandalong (Address will be provided when booking) NSW 2264
Cost: Free, although bookings essential. Please call (02) 4973 7000
Event Description:
Many families, struggling to balance the weekly budget, typically ask themselves the question: ‘how can we live cheaper?’ And with so much information around at the moment about the environment, they sometimes also ask themselves ‘how can we live more sustainably?’
The good news is that sustainable living practices can save you money; the bad news is that there’s so much information out there about green products and services, it’s easy to be hypnotised by the complexity of the whole thing. And anyway, what does sustainability really mean in practice?
Morisset Sustainable Neighbourhood Group would like to invite you to ‘Sustainability in Action’, an event that may help you take the first steps towards living greener. If you’ve been thinking ‘I’d like to make a difference, but it’s way too hard’ join us on Sunday 11th September at a rural property in Mandalong as one family discusses how they have put sustainable living practices into action.
The day will include information on grants from the Catchment Management Authority for land regeneration projects (useful for those with rural blocks); managing poultry and vegetable gardens; solar, passive solar and water storage options. If you live in the suburbs, don’t despair, there’s plenty of ways these practices can be adapted to inner city living.
The really great thing about this event is that it’s local people talking about sustainability issues relevant to the Morisset area, and their practical experience in putting sustainability into action,.
See you on Saturday 11th September to explore the first steps towards a greener life!
Please note that while this is a family friendly event, due to the rural nature of the property, children must be properly supervised. The Yara Balba Art Studio in Mandalong is approximately five minutes drive from the Morisset train station and is accessed via an unsealed road.
Organised by the Morisset Sustainable Neighbourhood Group with support from Lake Macquarie City Council, the NSW Environmental Trust, Southlake Community Services, Sustainable House Day 2011, Hunter Catchment Management Authority, and Yara Balba Arts Studio.
