Annabelle Harvey
I first learned about Elimination Communication when my first son was five months old (now five years old). Before that the options presented to me by my homebirth midwife regarding toileting were cloth nappies or disposables. I couldn’t put my finger on it at that time – but it seemed so strange shutting everything up ‘down there’ and ignoring it. Then I met a woman at a mothers group who swore by ‘Elimination Communication’ or ‘Natural Infant Hygiene’, and has gone on to write a highly successful website about her knowledge. See www.tribalbaby.org. Her information about babies’ elimination needs and the book Diaper Free: The Gentle Art of Natural Infant Hygiene by Ingrid Bauer, made me completely change not only the way I dealt with my first son’s elimination needs, but with the way I related with him as well. I began helping my second son learn to use his elimination muscles from the day he was born.
