Description
Long time and respected enviro-crusader Mick Harris is finally opening up his house to the public to show Melbournians what is possible when it comes to sustainable living. It is not a newly designed sci-fi futuristic home, it’s a pretty standard 1960s brick veneer home.
This 1960’s brick veneer house has been turned into a solar and wind powerhouse producing much more power than it needs and earning income for its owners. It has a wind turbine that feeds directly into the grid as well a 2 kW solar/battery stand alone system which can run part of the house with no grid connection. You still have power in a blackout. There is also 2 grid connect systems producing nearly 5 Kw. Part of the solar power system is a solar pergola which gives shade to the north side of the house and generates power at the same time. The house is also the home for a solar powered electric truck which is a modified 1960 electric milk float from the UK. Other features of the house include, LED lighting, water tanks, insulation chooks, veggie garden etc.
